i love animals.
i had been working for years, in a low-key way, with new york city shelters and animal rescues when, in 2007, one of my dogs died, very unexpectedly. that's her, miika, right. she was only three years old, and she just dropped dead one afternoon.
i was devastated, and decided the only way to make sense of her death was to work harder at helping other homeless animals. i was doing what i could to help my local shelter, the Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition, and emelinda narvaez, of Earth Angels, who had rescued miika from a vacant lot in bushwick.
then i read the amazing book Redemption, by nathan winograd. in it he lays out a series of approaches to achieve no-kill shelters, cities, and even, eventually, a no-kill united states. one of the cornerstones of his "plan" is widespread volunteer involvement and problem solving. i decided to do more, and be more pro-active in what i was doing.
so i designed and set up donation boxes for food and supplies at pet stores, first as a christmas project, then permanently. i started collecting towels and bedding, surplus food, and more from individuals, shops, and other non-profits.
finally, i got involved with a program called Safety Net, part of the NYCACC, which helps people NOT give up their animals. they coordinate low-cost vet care, provide pet food and supplies to folks who can't afford it, and help temporarily dislocated folks keep their animals in foster homes and low-cost boarding facilities so that losing a home or going into the hospital doesn't mean losing a pet too.
with the state of the economy deteriorating more and more people need help, at least temporarily, with the basics.
as an artist, i began silkscreening a few years ago, and really enjoy making things.
i'm selling these bags, posters, and t-shirts to raise money to help more individuals, and rescue groups, help more animals.
check back regularly- i'll keep adding things as i make them. and if you're in a band, or part of an organization that would like something made for you, or for an event, please get in touch.
check out my other gig, writing as the conscientious objector for the L Magazine.
if you have anything to donate, please see the donations page for what we need.
adopt, or foster!
